About This Spot

Stepping into McLoons Lobster Shack feels like discovering a quiet, cherished corner of the Maine coast that locals have long kept to themselves. Nestled just off Island Road in South Thomaston, this unassuming spot offers more than its rustic exterior might suggest—a sense of ease and seaside familiarity that invites you to slow down and savor the moment.

The pace here is gentle, much like the rhythm of tides brushing nearby shores. Outdoor picnic tables catch the afternoon sun, while the occasional fog rolls in, wrapping the place in a soft maritime hush. The mood is warmth in its simplest form: laughter shared among families, the faint clink of glasses, and the subtle scent of the sea mingling with woodsmoke and buttered bread.

At McLoons, eating feels like a small celebration of place and season. There’s a tenderness in how the lobster is freshly caught and brought to the table, the meat sweet and framed by buttery, crisp rolls. Grilled clams arrive smoky and tender, their flavor a quiet nod to the fires burning nearby. Root beer bubbles offer a nostalgic refreshment, while hand-pies and blueberry desserts provide a comforting finish, gently reminding you that summer afternoons always deserve to linger.

It’s not just a meal, but a scene where the simple joys of coastal living come into focus: watching a local tend lobster pots, settling in to the rhythm of conversations that ebb and flow, and feeling the easy camaraderie that comes with sharing good food in a beautiful place. The kind of spot where time slows just enough for you to breathe a little deeper — and return, whenever you can.

Shh. Don't tell anyone how great this place is... we don't want it over run with crowds! Certainly a (somewhat) hidden gem. The food is outstanding: Not just the seafood! We had blueberry bread pudding and blueberry hand pie to finish a great meal of lobster roll, full lobster, grilled clams and coleslaw. We were there the day before they closed for the season and it was crowded. Not unbearably, but definitely had to stand in line and wait for a seat by the water. And, it was worth it. There is a tent for inclement weather and ample seating. They even had a campfire with complimentary fixings for s'more! PS There's a hand-washing station near the Port-a-potty!!

I always miss this lobster shack spot because they close super early for the season but not this year. I came right by open time and they already have a long line. Very limited parking spot recommended to come early. The lobster roll is superb. Grill clams are a must. Lobster stew is fantastic. Moreover, the scenery is spectacular. We spot a lady walk to get fresh lobster from lobster pots. Very cool experience.

We were here just as they were opening a bit on the off season. 70 degrees and sunny made for an incredible experience. Grilled clams, lobster rolls, clam chowder, chips, Maine Root ginger beer this place was on point. Everyone was friendly, the location could not be better. They fish the lobsters out of the water as needed. Grilled clams were the best clams I've ever had. The lobster roll was also the best I've ever had, the clam chowder was good, but that's easy right? I imagine that in season this place is a mad house, we had a quiet, peaceful, visit, sitting at a picnic table right next to the water. It was idyllic. You must go.

Wife and I shared a lobster roll and a steamed lobster. The food was good but honestly left a little hungry. The atmosphere was gorgeous and wished we had a bottle of wine and sat there all night. The bread on the roll was buttery and crispy. The steam lobster was super sweet. All in all a very nice experience.

Visited this cozy lobster shack during a foggy afternoon, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip to Maine. The outdoor seating, though simple, felt incredibly welcoming - like a hidden nook tucked into the misty coast. I ordered a lobster roll and a bowl of clam chowder, and both were absolutely fantastic. The lobster roll was fresh, perfectly seasoned, and generous with meat, while the clam chowder was hands down one of the best I’ve ever tasted - creamy, flavorful, and packed with clams. The staff was friendly, helpful, and seemed genuinely happy to be there, which only added to the experience. If you’re looking for authentic, delicious seafood with a side of Maine charm and coastal atmosphere, don’t miss this spot. Highly recommend! P.S.: Be careful on the way there, right before the shack there is this narrow part of the road, don’t try to squeeze in, it’s too narrow.

We shared a lobster roll here on a summer July day a couple of months ago. The lobster was delicious, fresh and tasty. Coleslaw was good too. This is a very popular lobster shack and as we drove in to the very packed parking lot it was clear other people had the same idea as us. Eating this delicious lobster roll in a truly beautiful setting overlooking the water was a wonderful way to spend some time. Highly recommend.

Just spent a week in Maine and ate a lot of lobster rolls (including at some very well known places.) McLoons was the absolute BEST and it wasn’t close. Plus the service and atmosphere were outstanding. Just the most perfect place to eat a great lobster roll and watch the sunset. They had the fire pits going with sticks and marshmallows, and we got to watch a lobster unloading their catch right next door. Just the most perfect Maine experience. If you fly into Portland and are heading to Camden or Acadia, I highly recommend you make McLoons your first stop in Maine!
